(nb This is a real question)
I realize AA is having woes. But I thought the whole airline industry was having similar woes, and that the whole thing was one desperate, delicate balancing act.
I guess my question is this - are there not budget airlines that offer a similar level of service (ie, routing, # of flights, etc) that isn't having similar problems?
That's a bit harsh. American has been having problems, like most of the airlines, but they are not one of the ones in the news for having declared bankruptcy at all (much less twice), or having asked for a sixteenth round of wage concessions from their employees, etc.
So their business isn't totally secure right now, but they're not "in the process of going under".
For that kind of money, I'd wonder if you could get a share of a private jet instead, and whether that might be just as good a deal.
(Or, for yet another option, a new Pilatus PC-12, which is not actually a jet, but which is quite capable of taking you and several friends to Europe, only costs $4 million. I think you can pick them up used for like $2.5m. Of course, that doesn't include maintainence costs, hiring a pilot, insurance, hanger space, etc.)
